What is GPS?

The theory behind GPS portable units and GPS handheld units is simple: GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that works by receiving positioning messages from satellites in geosynchronous orbits and calculating locations by means of triangulation. GPS receivers locate the satellites transmitting the incoming signals and use CDMA (Code Division Multi Access) method to identify individual codes. This then means the handheld GPS or portable GPS system is able to identify each satellite's unique ID to calculate precise location and navigational data.

What is WAAS?

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) Okay, so what the heck is it? Basically, it's a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better? Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time.

Is there a fee to use GPS or WAAS?

No, there are no fees to use the Global Positioning System or the Wide Area Augmentation System.

What is a Transducer?

A transducer is a device, usually electrical, electronic, electromechanical, electromagnetic, photonic or photovoltaic that converts one type of energy or physical attribute to another for various purposes including measurement or information transfer.  The bottom line is that a transducer in a fishfinder and/or chartplotter is what helps the fish finder or chart plotter “find” the fish or the contours of the bottom of the lake, river or other body of water.
